June Linowitz’s Elemental works express her deep concern for the effects of climate change. Drawing on the ancient symbolism of the Four Elements—Earth, Air, Fire, and Water—she reflects on the fragile balance of the natural world. When that balance is lost, she reminds us, floods, droughts, and disasters follow. Her Planet in Peril series depicts this imbalance as a call to awareness and action.
A companion series reinterprets the Chinese Five Elements—Earth, Fire, Water, Wood, and Metal—which together form a harmonious and cyclical vision of nature. Each element, linked to a season, evokes renewal and equilibrium, offering a counterpoint to the disruption of Planet in Peril.
Each mixed-media work begins as a drawing, transferred by a forty-year-old copy machine onto handmade encaustic-painted paper. Linowitz then layers stitching, pastels, and collage, extending the imagery onto fabric surrounds that expand and comment upon the central form.
